"Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis are the most frequently isolated mycoplasmas from the human genital tract. They have been linked to pelvic inflammatory diseases such as tubo-ovarian abscess, salpingitis and bacterial vaginosis. These microorganisms are the most prevalent in the genital tract of sexually active women. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of M. hominis and U. urealyticum in the genital tract of women with different clinical symptoms. Specimens were taken from the cervix of randomly selected women and cultivated on PPLO agar and broth. Isolates were tested in PPLO-arginine broth and PPLO-urea broth and confirmed by Polymerase Chain Reaction method. A total of 217 cervical swabs were investigated. M. hominis was isolated in 24 cases (11 %) and U. urealyticum in 96 cases (44 %). The positive samples were compared with regard to genital symptoms, age of women and kind of contraception.
