"Mercury electrodes can served as a highly sensitive tool for the detection of DNA strand breaks or as a sensor for DNA cleaving species. Formation of single strand breaks can be sensitively detected using AC voltammetry at the sc DNA modified hanging mercury drop electrode (HMDE) or silver solid amalgam electrodes coated with mercury meniscus (m-AgSAE) or film (MF-AgSAE). Covalently closed circular (sc) DNA possessing no free ends does not yield an AC voltammetric peak 3 while DNA molecules involving free ends do. Both m-AgSAE and MF-AgSAE provides similar information about DNA damage as the HMDE. These electrodes were used for detection of enzymatic and chemical DNA cleavage in solution or at the electrode surface. Using analogous principle, it is also possible to detected damage to DNA bases after its enzymatic conversion to the single strand breaks."@en .
