"Over the fifty years of its existence the Central Bohemian Gallery was subject to several twists of fate which provide a template for the Czech gallery environment and may even serve as a model for an amalgamate of a cultural institution with political representation, or more generally the tight bond between the cultural and the political history of the Czech state. The study examines the first of these abrupt changes in the work of the gallery, which were inflicted on it at the beginning of the 1970s. Hand in hand with the politics normalization of Czechoslovakia and the whole of its public life, the outward manifestations of the institution and its inner environment were brought into line with the state policy. The gallery management was replaced, the permanent exhibition re-installed, the collecting and exhibition strategy was changed. The situation was aggravated by the fact that the institution up to then narrowly profiled on contemporary non-figurative and abstract art became a showcase of Socialist Realism of the 1970s and 1980s. The existing extensive high-quality collections turned into something of a burden in the period context as normalization was seen as the new beginning of the gallery. The study attempts to describe the accompanying aspects of normalization in one of the Czech \u201Cregional galleries\u201D, the period vocabulary, and the outcomes of the process the roots of which are linked to the creation of the gallery system in the 1950s."@en . .
