"This study was performed in cooperation with the State Veterinary Administration (SVA) in order to monitor the occurrence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli isolates in swabs from the carcasses of pigs and cattle at slaughterhouses. Out of 486 swabs 22 positive samples were detected. There were obtained 22 isolates of shigatoxigennic E. coli (STEC) in total and 1 strain with the characteristic of potential enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). Results of this study show the overall prevalence of shigatoxigennic E. coli 4.5% and 0.2% of potential enterohemorrhagic strains in the examined samples.
