Its role lays mainly in anti-infectious immunity, but also in the modulation of some immunopathological conditions. Knowledge that Th1-type of response associated with the production of IFN-\u03B3 is behind the development of certain conditions has led to the laboratory detection of cellular immunity using the interferon-release assay. The test is based on a quantification of IFN-\u03B3 production by immune cells after in vitro stimulation with specific antigen or nonspecific mitogen.
