"Splenomegaly is a characteristic feature of systemic infection which can be recorded also after Salmonella infection in chickens. In this study we were therefore interested in gene expression in chicken spleen after the infection with Salmonella Enteritidis. Since the splenomegaly is more pronounced after intravenous infection than after oral infection, we used this model being fully aware of its limitations. Using pyrosequencing and real-time PCR we identified 40 genes expression of which was increased after the infection. Most of these genes have never been associated chicken response to the infection with S. Enteritidis. The highest inductions were observed for avidin, immune-response gene 1, serum amyloid A, extracellular fatty-acid binding protein, chemokine AH221, trappin-6 and immunoglobulins. In next experiments we tested avidin activity in vitro and in vivo. Our experiments did not prove any direct influence of avidin on Salmonella growth and its intravenous application to chickens prior an infection with S.
