The respiratory tract forms a major mucosal interface with the external environment. Therefore, it plays the decisive role in defence of the entire respiratory tract against infections. The mucocilliary barrier is of major importance for nonspecific defence of the respiratory tract mucosa. If pathogenic bacteria overcome this barrier and penetrate into deeper layers of mucosa, activation of specific immunity occurs. Specific immune defence of the respiratory tract mucosa is provided by the common mucosal immune system mechanisms, with the IgA antibodies being the main effector. Inductive sites for mucosal immune responses are constituted by a specific type of organized lymphoid tissue in the respiratory tract, which mediates a direct contact of immune cells with antigens, their recognition and processing.
