These foodborne (enteric) viruses are adapted to specific environment of host gastrointestinal tract and are resistant outside the host organism. Therefore they are able to survive in feedstock and foodstuff during processing and storage. The most common agents of alimentary diseases are noroviruses, hepatitis A virus and hepatitis E virus. These viruses are responsible for gastroenteritis or hepatitis. The hepatitis E virus was recognized as zoonotic pathogen recently, while the zoonotic potential of noroviruses is still discussed. Due to problematic cultivation of foodborne viruses on cell cultures, molecular biological methods based on PCR or NASBA are used for their detection. Increasing importance of viruses as causes of alimentary diseases is acknowledged by the fact that Codex Alimentarius will be extended by hygiene policies for virus control of foodstuff."@en . . .
