"Hepatitis E is recognized as zoonotic disease and pigs and likely other animal species are reservoirs for HEV. Outbreaks of hepatitis E most commonly occur in developing countries and are associated with faecal contamination of drinking water and water for industrial purposes. In industrial countries, HEV has been detected rather sporadically. Risk factors for these cases are associated with travelling of patients to developing countries, consumption of insufficiently heat treated meat or venison and direct contact with infected animals. In the Czech Republic HEV RNA was detected in 37.5% of domestic pigs and in 8.3% of wild boars. Phylogenetic analysis of HEV isolates originating from these animals and Czech patients revealed that these isolates are clustered in one subtype of genus Hepevirus.
