Examination results showed that Salmonella prevalence was dependant on epidemiological situation in pig herds. Latently infected herds were the source of Salmonella contamination in slaughterhouses. Salmonella prevalence in slaughtered pigs, originated from infected herds, ranged from 2 to 12% and from 2 to 54%, in the first and second period, respectively. Salmonella was most frequently isolated in slaughtered pigs from caecum (2.45 and 8.7%) and mesenteric lymph nodes (0.73 and 0.89%). Findings on carcass halves and slaughter line were sporadic. These findings obtained on Salmonella distribution in fattening pigs confirm the necessity of high level hygiene and developed technology at pork processing."@en .
