"Two exponential models of distribution of winter wheat and potato root length in a soil profile were compared. The fit between observed and predicted root distribution was satisfactory, in all cases, R2 > 0,8, at about four fifth of data sets the fit was good, R2 > 0,9. The impact of use of observed and fitted root distributions as input parameters for simulation of wheat with crop model CERES-Wheat was analysed. The use of fitted distribution showing worse agreement with observed data (R2 < 0,82) resulted in modified simulated root growth, reduced water availability and lower yield only in some years.
