"Young, hydroponically grown plants of the field-grown barley (Hordeum vulgare) Czech cultivar Amulet and Syrian landrace Tadmor were exposed to salinity stress. Concentration of NaCl was gradually increased from 0 up to 300 mM NaCl. Salt stress exhibited strong dehydration and osmotic effects leading to a significant increase in water saturation deficit (WSD) and a significant decrease in osmotic potential, respectively. The highest increase in WSD and the highest decrease in osmotic potential were found in plants exposed to 300 mM NaCl. Salinity stress also induced an increase in endogenous abscisic acid levels thus indicating activation of several ABA-dependent stress-responsive regulatory pathways. Accumulation of a wide scale of dehydrin proteins \u2013 a high-molecular-weight DHN5 protein as well as several low-molecular-weight dehydrins \u2013 was found in both genotypes. Both quantitative and qualitative differences in dehydrin relative accumulation levels have been found between the two barley genotypes.
