"At a regional scale, in an environmental risk assessment procedure, exposure pathways and effective amount of exposed population are two key variables. The Zambian Copperbelt Province was chosen as a study area to develop and test a Geographical Information System (GIS) aided technique to prioritise risk for human health. The distribution of metals in top- and bottom-soil was used to assess the degree of contamination and (1) both (1) soil/dust and (2) food ingestion were selected as the most relevant pathways in the migration process of contaminants from source to human receptors. The impact of different land uses on the exposure pathways was also considered in the risk assessment procedure. Finally, a simple method to assign a priority score to contaminated land in the planning of the remediation at a regional scale was proposed based on the best costbenefit ratio principle."@en .
