"This publication summarizes the development of the International Geoscience Program ( the former International Geological Correlation Program - IGCP) activities in the former Czechoslovakia and after split up in the Czech and Slovak Republic. The International Geoscience Program is an outstanding and unique example of cooperative program between UNESCO and the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The IGCP was founded in 1972 with the main goal of scientific exchange through a correlation of different geological data that would enable to find globally valid connections between various events throughout he Earth\u00B4s history. The former Czechoslovak scientits played an important active role during the process of preparation and foundation of IGCP at an international level. Over the years, the focus of the IGCP evolved. Starting from 2011 it addresses key geological issues for people of today that are represented by the following five themes: (1) Global change and evolution of life, (2) Geohazards: Mitigating the risks, (3) Hydrogeology: Geoscience of the water cycle, (4) Earth Resources: Sustaining our society, and (5) Deep Earth: How it controls our environment. IGCP history in our region dates back to 1973 when the Czechoslovak IGCP National Committee was established. Since that time our geoscientists coordinated several IGCP and actively participated in many others. Major scientific results are described in this publication."@en . . . . . . . .
