"Collections of the National Museum – Náprstek Museum of African, Asian and American Cultures include a significant and interesting collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities that originated in an exceptional archaeological location – Deir el-Medina and its environs, Western Thebes. Egyptian written and material culture left unique evidence in Deir el-Medina. The site, as well as the Prague collection, is closely connected with the life and work of Jaroslav Černý, Egyptologist, who left a lasting legacy in Czech, Czechoslovak, Egyptian, British and French Egyptology. Deir el-Medina is a renowned site – a settlement of workmen, craftsmen and artists employed as builders of the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings and Queens in Western Thebes. There are few sites in Egypt which may boast the unique combination of habitations, burial sites and written evidence in continuity, quality and quantity comparable to Deir el-Medina. It is likely that literacy in the village was much higher than in any other community in Egypt except in the highest echelons of the Egyptian society. Thanks to papyri and ostraca, Egyptologists have gained insight into everyday existence as well as mentality of the community of workmen. The collections of the Náprstek museum present both texts and material culture – pottery, linen and other objects that constituted an ancient life-world. This book is the first publication to present the Deir el-Medina collection in Prague in its entirety, and its aim is to contribute to international Deir el-Medina studies as well as to fulfil an important aspect of the Jaroslav Černý legacy – the Egyptologist’s wish to make the collection that he had helped to create, accessible to the public. The present volume includes introduction, history of the collections, and a catalogue of a large part of the material culture assemblage from Deir el-Medina housed in the Náprstek Museum. It presents a blend of history of Egyptology, museology and a museum catalogue."@en . "Svobodová, Helena" . . "RIV/00023272:_____/14:#0002372" . "Toivari-Viitala, Jaana" . "I" . .
