"The aim of the study: Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-ct) and interleukin 1-beta (IL-1(3) are important pro-inflammatory cytokines. Promoter polymorphisms TNF-A -863C/A, TNF-A -238G/A, haplotype [-511C; -31T] of the IL-1B promoter and penta-allelic 86-bp tandem repeat in intron 2 of IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RN) increase expression of TNF-A and IL-1B, respectively. We tested whether these polymorphisms are associated with susceptibility to alcoholic liver cirrhosis (ALC). Material and methods: Allelic frequencies of the polymorphisms were determined in 100 heavy drinkers with alcoholic cirrhosis and 180 non-abstaining age and sex matched healthy controls. Results: No association with ALC was found for individual alleles TNF-A -863A, TNF-A -238A, IL1-RN*2 and haplotype (-511C; -31T) of the IL-1B promoter.
