"The aim of the study was to contribute to better understanding of spatial and temporal variability in flow and drought characteristics in Europe. The results showed that during 19th and 20th century the analyses of large European rivers exhibited similar flow patters. The highest long-term flow changes were detected in the 19th century, i.e. in the period when climate and flow were not significantly affected by human activities. It was demonstrated that long-term climate variability (mainly variability in precipitation) was the main causal factor of the long-term variability in the runoff, while the role of changes in land use was substantially less important."@en .
