"In the last two years a cell-tracking algorithm CELLTRACK was developed in the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, which was a response on COTREC algorithm unsatisfying forecast of convective storms deviating from mean wind field. Reflectivity cores (representing convective cells) are two-dimensional objects derived from maximum reflectivity field. Differently from COTREC, CELLTRACK tracks each individual reflectivity core and forecast of each core's position is based on its previous occurrence. There is emphasis on correct assignment of reflectivity cores during splitting and merging when they occur. In convective situations CELLTRACK proves slightly better performance in forecasting of reflectivity cores positions in 20-50 minute timescale.
