"Chromium (Cr), in its water-soluble hexavalent form, is one of the most toxic elements released by industries to the environment. In the Czech Republic, over 150 sites with elevated Cr concentrations have been identified. Out of these, 50 sites exceed the Cr drinking-water limit 20 or more times. With the advent of a new generation of mass spectrometers, it is now possible to determine the abundance ratio of stable chromium isotopes. There are indices, that natural attenuation of Cr pollution in aquifers is accompanied by a unique Cr isotope fractionation. Chromium isotope fractionation results from microbial or abiotic reduction of hexavalent Cr to trivalent, less toxic, Cr. The objective of this project is to use Cr isotope ratios to identify contaminated aquifers, in which natural attenuation has been triggered off. At such sites, there is, in principle, little need to allocate financial resources for relatively expensive chemical treatment. Instead, a prediction can be made of decreasing Cr conce"@en .
