"The project aim was to determine the differences in securing food for spruce and beech stands in similar environmental conditions, to what extent is the nutrient balance in different conditions sustainable and how it is affected by anthropogenic deposition and forest management. "The aim of the project proposed is to consider current state of stand nutrition, nutrient inputs and outputs in the ecosystem, and their total balance, affected by forest management measures, on the base of complex evaluation of the spruce and beech stands in different natural conditions. The project will be based on the long-term investigation plots of intensive monitoring of the forest ecosystems within ICP Forests and Forest Focus Programme, and selected satellite plots in the stands of the two tree species investigated of different age. Nutrient dynamics within the system will be evaluated on the base of their amount in humus, mineral soil, wood, bark, and assimilation organs of trees. Nutrient input will be stated in deposition measuring and evaluation of possible weathering of geological basement, the output by water run-off of the soil profile, surface water run-off and remove of the wood mass in management operations.
