The project has been designed to decide whether drug-resistant strains of Bacillus cereus, Enterococcus faecium, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and coagulase negative staphylococci actually penetrate into the food chain via materials of animal origin. The project involves purposive, systematic, and comprehensive analyses of the situations in dairy and beef cattle herds, production chains, and final products of two milk and two meat plants. The isolated strains will be typified using codified identification and molecular genetic methods to confirm or deny the congruency in phenotypic and/or genotypic markers between the strains isolated from the animals and from the final products.
