Recently, it has been proposed that administration of inorganic nitrites/nitrates can be simple, effective and economic strategy to reduce risks of anthracycline cardiotoxicity, although data from complex experimental models are lacking. Hence, in this project, the efficacy and safety of this intervention will be evaluated on well established chronic in vivo model and on isolated cardiomyocytes. Furthermore, potential interference with anticancer effects of anthracyclines will be revealed. The risk of cardiotoxicity can be markedly increased by combination of anthracyclines with some novel targeted therapeutics. Recently, a combination with proteasome inhibitor - bortezomib - has been introduced to clinical practice, although the cardiovascular safety is not sufficiently described.
