"The main scope of the project is to examine the role of various types of immune cells in the development of adipose tissue low-grade inflammation in obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. It also aims at identifying substances responsible for the interaction between residing immune cells, their circulating precursors and other components of adipose tissue. The project is based on an extensive metabolic, hormonal and immunological characterization of patients undergoing very-low-calorie diet or bariatric surgery for weight reduction. Flow cytometry and advanced molecular biological methods will be used to assess cellular content of adipose tissue and peripheral blood and mRNA expression of selected chemotactic and inflammatory factors. A complex metabolomic analysis of adipose tissue and blood plasma will be used to identify novel signaling molecules responsible for interactions between various fractions of immunocompetent cells, especially in connection with metabolically favourable weight reduction."@en .
