"The major objective of the proposed project is the evaluation of effects of endovascular mild therapeutic hypothermia on biomarkers of oxidative stress, antioxidant defense activity, and long-term outcomes in cardiac arrest survivors. Markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant defense activity will be measured periodically in the first three days after cardiac arrest and the effect of endovascular hypothermia will be compared with standard techniques for hypothermia induction and maintenance; moreover, values obtained during hypothermia in cardiac arrest survivors will be compared with the same parameters in patients suffering from large anterior myocardial infarction. Patients will be followed-up for one year; the effect of endovascular hypothermia on long-term outcomes will be compared with standard hypothermia techniques.
