"As not all patients with receiving glucocorticoids (GC) have low bone mineral density (BMD), it is possible that there may be genetics factors placing some individuals at increased risk for bone loss. The main goals of the project are: 1) to examine in the cohort of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients long-term treated with low-dose GS whether there is a relationship between vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms VDR 3\u00B4 (BsmI) or VDR 5\u00B4(FokI) and variation in BMD, body composition and bone turnover; 2) to examine whether there is a association between these VDR gene polymorphisms and bone response to vitamin D3 plus calcium supplementation; 3) to identify other risk factors for osteoporosis ; and 4) to evaluate long term effects of preventive care in this risk population. We suggest that VDR genotype variants in combination with clinical risk factors can identify those patients at greater risk of bone loss.
