"Our aim is to test whether in a mixed muscle like rat extensor digitorum longus (EDL)that undergoes an experimental treatment, oxidative fibres are better supplied with capillaries than nonoxidative fibres. We will study control, denervated and reinnervated rat EDL muscles. Capillaries will be demonstrated with a triple immunofluorescent staining and NADH-TR reaction will be applied to differenciate among oxidative and nonoxidative fibres. This approach will enable, for the first time, to study 3D images of capillaries adjacent to individual fibres of defined type, acquired by confocal microscopy.We will develop methods for tracing and 3D visualization of capillaries. We will measure the mean cross-sectional area and the perimeter of fibre cross-sections. Further, the length of capillaries adjacent to individual fibres per muscle fibre length, surface area, and volume will be measured. The measured parameters of oxidative and nonoxidative fibres will be compared in control, denervated and reinnervate"@en . . . .
