Main focus of these experiments has been laid on agronomic aspects. Therefore yield trends are mainly measured and analysed over time. Furthermore these experiments allow a close insight on aspect beside yield trends like the sustainability of farming system, quality parameters of the harvested products and biodiversity. In Austria, we are in the lucky position of having a long-term experiment assessing the effects of rotational and permanent cropping of rye amended with different fertilizers which was established in 1906 on the Experimental Station of the University of Natural Resources and Live Sciences Vienna in Gro\u00DF-Enzersdorf.The aims at the start of the long-term trial in 1906 were to assess (i) the possibility of completely replacing farmyard manure by easily soluble mineral fertilisers, (ii) to assess if different fertilisation systems are able to compensate for crop rotation deficits from continuous cropping of winter rye. Given the fact that the experiment has come into its second century it is of high interest performing (1) a comprehensive assessment of the agronomic characteristics of the crop stands more than 100 years after establishment of the experiment; 2) a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between the soil and plant biomass chemical properties including the effects of long-term fertilizer application with a special focus on (2a) macro- (N, P, K, Ca and Mg), micro element (Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) concentrations and (2b) trace element (As, Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb) concentrations in the soil and the above-ground plant biomass."@en . .
