"Downy and powdery mildews are obligate biotrophic plants pathogens causing severe diseases in economically important crops. Their diagnostics is currently based on a combination of host specificity, symptoms and microscopy. Although the relevance of phenotypic characters has been discussed, microscopic investigation still remains indispensable. However, this method depends strongly on systematic practice and experience of a plant pathologist. We suggest to develop an alternative approach based on mass spectrometry, which requires only very small amount of biological material and sample processing and data interpretation are fast and relatively easy. Database searches with comparing typical and unknown mass spectra then allow identification and taxonomical classification of microorganisms for example by principle component analysis. A majority of planned experiments will rely on mass spectrometric analyses of surface proteins released by an acidic treatment of the plant pathogens. In the frame of this"@en .
