"Seasonal snow cover occurrence is one of the most pronounced characteristics of the temperate climate and in many regions of France and the Czech Republic it constitutes significant portion of the annual precipitation. Most of the agricultural lands in these regions are influenced by its presence and the success of cropping schemes (e.g. production of winter cereals or grassland) depends on its character, depth and duration. Snow cover affects air and soil temperature, watershed hydrology and energy budgets. It also represents an important source of moisture for agricultural crops while in the same time it regulates soil freezing and influences soil hydraulic properties and the over-winter survival of crops (as well as pests of field crops). Decreased hydraulic conductivity of frozen soils increases the potential for high snowmelt runoff losses, while freezing injury can cause yield loss to over-wintering crops.
