In preovulatory follicles nuclear maturation is triggered by an endogenous surge in LH. Only oocytes that have reached metaphase II possess full developmental competence to be fertilized and develop to term. Resumption of meiosis and meiotic maturation are characterized by nuclear envelope breakdown and dynamic changes in microtubules followed by first polar body extrusion. These events are CDK1 dependent. CDC25A/B/C dual phosphatases are activators of cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs).
