"The pulsed high voltage discharges in water generate plasma that initiate a variety of physical and chemical effects as high electric field, intense ultraviolet radiation, overpressure shock waves and, especially, formation of various reactive chemical s, pecies acting on biological cells and chemical compounds dissolved in water. The mechanism of the degradation of organics or sterilization is attributed mainly to the oxidation by hydroxyl radicals produced directly by the discharge. The removal efficien, cy of the discharge can be significantly enhanced in the presence of iron due to Fenton's reaction, when hydrogen peroxide produced by the discharge reacts with ferrous ion to produce next hydroxyl radicals. However, the addition of iron to the solution, may result in a new waste treatment problem involving subsequent elimination of added iron from water.
