"We intend to investigate the evolution of sex chromosomes by comparison of the organization of chromosomes in species with diverse sex determination mechanisms in the plant genus Silene. Silene is a good model for studies of the evolution of reproductive strategy because it includes species that are true hermaphrodites, gynodioecious or dioecious. Phylogenetic studies indicate that the Silene evolved from a gynodioecious population. Because all Silene species have 2n=24 chromosomes, the sex chromosomes of dioecious species likely evolved from an autosome pair. We have characterized a variety of DNA sequences linked to the male-specific Y chromosome. These sequences will be mapped to chromosome preparations of various Silene species using FISH technique.
