The project concentrates on the solution of the following problems: (1) The physical investigation of the formation of nanocrystalline and nanocomposite films, particularly the mechanisms for stopping of the growth of grains, process of selective reactive magnetron sputtering, segregation of atoms to boundaries of grains at low temperatures close to room temperature, thermal stability of films and dependences otheir properties on the grain size, (2) The development of a new generation of hard nanocomposite films composed of hard nanocrystalline grains embedded in a soft matrix and a hard matrix, e.g. CrN/Ni, ZrN/Cu, TiN/Cu,Ni,Co, TiN/Si3N4. and (3) The development of new sputtering systems for production of nanocrystalline and nanocomposite films.
