"The aim of the project is to ensure material and human operational resources for the international laser research infrastructure PALS in the period 2011-2015. The PALS infrastructure is the only one in CR equipped with a kJ-class high-power laser facility - the TW iodine photodissociation laser called the Prague Asterix Laser System. The facility has been serving European research community since 2000, belonging at present to the four largest civilian lasers in EU. The PALS as a founding member of the LASERLAB-EUROPE consortium offers open access to European users, serving simultaneously as a training site in the field of laser and laser-plasma physics for both Czech and foreign students and young scientists. Its extensive international collaboration has resulted in substantial increase of the domestic scientific capacity in the above fields and, therefore, also of the quality of scientific outputs and prestige of the Czech laser research as a whole. The present involvement of CR in the HiPER and ELI projects from the ESFRI Roadmap may be considered as one of the positive results of that development. The main goals of the project are the following: (i) Create conditions for further increasing the quality of training of young laser scientists. (ii) Meet the demand for experimental beam time of EU and domestic users who conduct their experiments in the frame of the coordinated European laser research, including benchmark experiments and development works for European ESFRI projects. (iii) Provide Czech industrial subjects, potential suppliers of components for big European lasers, with necessary experimental base and know-how. (iv) Prepare substantial innovation of the PALS infrastructure to ensure its efficient collaboration with HiPER and ELI projects after the year 2015.
