"This project aims at advanced methods enabling a rigorous characterization of focused X-ray laser beams which is of crucial importance for interaction experiments employing novel X-ray laser devices, namely free-electron lasers. Within a bilateral Czech-American scientific cooperation new target materials for X-ray laser beam characterization and X-ray Hartmann sensor will be developed. Major part of the experimental work will be performed at the LCLS (Linac Coherent Light Source) facility being in operation since 2009. Experimental research and development will be accompanied with a theoretical work focused on numerical LCLS beam simulations and phase-recovery code. New numerical code should be capable of LCLS beam modeling from the undulator source down to focus in the vacuum interaction chamber. The phase-recovery code should be able to retrieve wave-front curvature from a sequence of intensity profile measurements in a close vicinity of the focus. Results of both the experimental and theoretical tools will be systematically studied and mutually compared in order to verify their reliability, feasibility, and applicability. The joint project is designed as self-sufficient and self-consistent. It is mutually beneficial for both contributing partners as it merges otherwise scattered efforts on the field of focused X-ray laser beam characterization into a compact framework. The project was designed on the basis of already existing collaboration between Institute of Physics AS CR and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory which established during recent years.
