"Studies of evolutionary consequences of presence or absence of reward to pollinators are in forefront of plant pollination ecology. Orchids contain a large number of species offering no reward to pollinators - a strategy highly unusual in the plant kingdom. This project focuses on experimental investigation of evolutionary advantages of rewardlessness in orchids using three model species. Our aims involve (i) manipulation of the amount of nectar reward and of reproductive success of plants, (ii) insect-plant experiments under controlled conditions and (iii) using of genetic techniques as tools for analyses of parent/offspring relatedness in orchids. All previous studies have dealt with rewardless species, addition of artificial nectar and bumblebee pollination system. Our project will approach the problem from a different point of view: that of studying evolution of rewardlessness by using rewarding species and a different pollination system (nocturnal butterflies as pollinators)."@en .
