"Subterranean rodents, an excellent example of convergent evolution, became a model group for many types of mainly laboratory studies. Field research is nevertheless inevitable for understanding significance of adaptive strategies enabling their permanent subterranean life. Here proposed project focuses mainly on following poorly known areas of biology in African mole-rats: 1) influence of temperature fluctuation and social system on circadian activity pattern; 2) spatial activity and burrow system dynamics of social mole-rat in response to environmental conditions; 3) comparison of foraging ecology and habitat selection of solitary and social species. Two species of mole-rats will be studied by radio-telemetry, burrow systems of the social one will be subsequently mapped including food resources. Habitat selection of solitary and social mole-rats will be studied in area of their sympatric occurrence, which will enable testing predictions of hypothesis on the evolution of eusociality."@en .
