"Proposed project deals with the population genetic structure of fragmented and isolated populations in two European endemics, the European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) and the garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus). Aim of the project is to estimate the level of population genetic structuring of the scattered populations from the Czech Republic and to compare them with more continuous and abundant populations from other parts of Europe. To investigate population genetic structure of both species, neutral and adaptive variability will be analysed, i.e. microsatellite loci vs. MHC genes. Comparison of population genetic structure using neutral and selected loci can provide information about the type of selection working on the genes of immune system (local adaptation vs. balancing selection) and can help to suggestions about the conservation strategy."@en . .
