"2011-06-14+02:00"^^ . . . "Metabolic rate is a fundamental organismal feature. Baseline metabolisms scale negatively allometrically to body mass, however, the precise value of scaling coefficient and its theoretical elucidation is a matter of discussions. Currently, there exist two alternative explanations: the first is based on fractal geometry and always predicts scaling coefficient 3/4. The second one claims that metabolism scales with a power between 2/3 and 1 depending on the scaling of essential body parts \u2013 cells. The aim of the project is to study cell size as an underlying factor affecting intra- and interspecific variation in body size and metabolic rate in two monophyletic groups of geckos. Both groups exhibit large size variation, previously we have found positive interspecific correlation of erythrocyte and body size in one of these groups. Therefore, they represent suitable models for testing general explanations of metabolic scaling and the role of cell size in body size changes and ecophysiology."@en . . . "cell size" . . .
