Relative isolation of suitable localities together with limited chance of dispersal could result in considerable genetic diversification of populations. Moreover, the selection of genotypes adapted to particular conditions (coniferous forest vs. open exposures) may play an important role in genetic fragmentation of some species. The aim of this study is to determine the genetic variability in Czech and Slovak populations of two common Chloromonas species, C. nivalis and C. brevispina, with respect to geographical distance of localities and environmental factors. The phylogenetic relationship of European strains with North American ones will be also assessed. To fulfil this aim, DNA sequences with different rate of evolution will be analysed (introns ypt4, act, spacer region ITS, 18S rDNA).
