"Traditional zoogeographic data suggested that the Black Sea basin served as an important glacial refugium and postglacial colonization source of Europe by freshwater organisms. Recent molecular phylogeographic study published by the applicant revaled the existence of four refugial genetic lineages of the cyprinid fish complex Barbus barbus and B. tauricus, whose evolution reflected the complex Quaternary history of the Black Sea, which was a freshwater lake until the Early Holocene. The proposed phylogeographic study of the Black Sea chub (Petroleuciscus borysthenicus) intends to constitute one of the most detailed phylogeographic analyses conducted hithero in the Black region, which after comparison with the phylogeography of the barbels will allow us for the first time to assess the importance of biological characteristics of fish species in their response to the Quaternary climatic and environmental changes in the Black Sea."@en .
