"The aim of this project is to design and fabricate miniature sponge-like porous structures, which will have the ability to expand or shrink after an external stimulus, thereby functioning as the artificial equivalent of glands, which are responsible for internal secretion of fluids within organisms. Such artificial glands can have many interesting technological applications in areas including controlled release and delivery of drugs, or tissue engineering. The main challenges of the project will be the bio-mimetic engineering of simple yet functional porous media that capture the essential functions of glands, and the fabrication of functional prototypes of such structures from suitable materials (stimuli responsive polymers) by three-dimensional ink-jet printing. The project has a planned duration of 36 months, and will be carried out by a team consisting of one academic, a post-doctoral researcher, and a post-graduate student."@en .
