"The primary radiation in low-Earth orbit is composed by different types of particles (electrons, protons, alphas, heavier nuclei) with energies usually ranging from several MeV up to many GeV. By passing these particles through the structure of a spacecraft, very complex radiation field is formed, composed by primary high-energy particles, and by secondary particles created in nuclear reactions, mostly neutrons. Their contribution can vary in large extent, depending on the shielding, orbit parameters, phase of solar cycle, etc. The main goal of this project is to develop new methods to determine the contribution of neutrons to the exposure onboard of spacecraft. Two experimental approaches will be used: track-etch detectors and active device Liulin. The methods developed will be then used to estimate the neutron contribution onboard of ISS. The radiation field inside the spacecraft will be also simulated by means of some MC codes; experimental and calculated results will be compared."@en .
