Discharges are generated either directly in the liquid or in the gas in close proximity to the liquid surface or in both phases simultaneously. The aim of this project is to develop fundamental understanding of the mechanisms and the role of individual processes in the plasma induced decontamination and disinfection of water. The research will focus on the elucidation of effects of pulse power characteristics on the formation and chemical activity of discharge plasmas in water; and mechanisms and the role of chemically active species, UV light, electric field and shock waves in the plasma induced inactivation of microorganisms in water. Clarification of these effects will provide insight into understanding of the mechanisms induced by electric discharges in water and will allow further development of the nonthermal plasma technology for water treatment applications."@en . .
