"On a set of embryos and foetuses of placental mammals from various taxonomical groups (Insectivora, Rodentia, Artiodactyla, Cetacea), mechanisms and principles of early odontogenesis wil be analyzed and compared both qualitatively and morphometrically using histological sections and computer assisted 3-D-reconstructions. The aim of the project is the verification of the following hypothesis: During the development of dental primordia for multicusped teeth of placental mammals, several underunits are intergrated which correspond with monocusped teeth of mammalian ancestors.
