"The proposed research deals with biological features of hemiparasitic plants belonging to the Euphrasia group, a monophyletic clade comprising several genera of the family Orobanchaceae. The main aim is to understand and explain evolutionary success of species displaying special physiological features, an unusual constellation of life history traits and tendency to form similar ecotypes across different genera. A combination of complementary methodical approaches will be employed. Comprehensive fitness-oriented cultivation experiments will provide data on adaptations and constrains affecting performance of individual species and their ecotypes. Conjoint physiological measurements are projected to reveal mechanisms of these processes and the physiological adaptations for living in various habitat types. Tracking of life history traits on the phylogenetic tree of the study group will demonstrate the evolution of life strategies and their impact on evolutionary and diversification rate."@en .
