Our recent results, obtained by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) in Bombyx mori, Ephestia kuehniella, and Galleria mellonella suggest an accumulation of common repetitive sequences in the W chromosome. In addition, we found a male killing activity in a W-chromosome segment of Ephestia mutants. We propose here a detailed analysis of the W chromosome in selected species by methods of molecular cytogenetics. We intend to study molecular differentiation of the W by CGH, molecular composition of the W by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) mapping of probes derived either from Bombyx retrotransposones or from W-chromatin, and pattern of histone acetylation in W and Z.It is expected that results obtained will contribute to understanding the role of W chromosome in sex determination of Lepidoptera."@en .
