Apoptosis as the best known way of physiological cell death can be activated via membrane receptors or intrinsic pathways. Activation of caspase machinery follows as the next steps. In the case of apoptosis absence/inhibition in vivo, it seems probable that alternative forms of cell death - autophagy or even necrosis may be activated, moreover, compensatory mechanisms among caspases appear likely to be engaged. This project aims to use established models of cell death combined with novel approaches to contribute to general knowledge of biological mechanisms of embryonal apoptosis, its tissue specifity and intracellular signalling network. In the functional studies, particularly caspase compensatory mechanisms will be investigated and alternative pathways followed.
