"Mitochondria are archetypal organelles of endosymbiotic origin in eukaryotic cells. However, some eukaryotes, including human parasites Giardia intestinalis and Trichomonas vaginalis were considered to be amitochondrial organisms that diverged from the eukaryotic lineage before the acquisition of the pre-mitochondrial endosymbiont. However, trichomonads possess double membrane organelles called hydrogenosomes origin of which might be common with mitochondria. More recently, in giardia, double membrane-bound organelles named mitosomes were discovered, which may represent highly reduced mitochondria. This project is focused on comparative analysis of protein targeting, translocation and processing in hydrogenosomes, mitosomes and mitochondria. Expected results should provide new insight into coevolution of targeting presequences together with translocase machines, and functional adaptation of mitochondrial processing peptidases and in general sence to our understanding of eukaryogenesis."@en . . .
