"Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are involved in infectious inflammation through the recognition of microbial structures. TLRs also appear to recognize endogenous ligands and thus participate in sterile inflammation. The nature of the endogenous ligands remains elusive and represents a topic of great scientific and clinical interest. Our recent data provide the first evidence for the expression of TLRs and their co-receptor CD14 on embryonic phagocytes suggesting their involvement in sterile inflammation during early development. The main objectives of this proposal are to: (i) identify the endogenous molecules recognized by TLRs and CD14; (ii) trace the origin of embryonic phagocytes using CD14 promoter-driven EGFP expression and (iii) characterize other unique surface receptors and molecules expressed by the embryonic phagocytes.
